How to get Start Microsoft SQL Server? Microsoft SQL Server for beginner’s tutorial is divided into many parts having huge practical and activities here. How to Download Microsoft SQL Server Express (Microsoft SQL Server for beginners: Part – 2)

To start with it we need to download and use a free version/Express edition of Microsoft SQL Server. I am going to use Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express.

The first thing I would like to know you that you need to get start with a FREE version or copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition, in this way please click here to navigate to download it absolutely free from Microsoft official Servers, once opened Microsoft page please click on the orange “Download” button (if you are unable to reach at Microsoft’s official website then follow the link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062). When you click on the download button a popup window will appear “Choose the download you want”, you have to click the check box next to “ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe” if you have a 64-bit machine. Referring the below snapshot –

If you have 32-bit machine then download the file named “ENU\x86\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe”. Referring the below snapshot –

And then click on “Next” button to download the executable file. Referring the below snapshot –





Once downloaded executable file, please run it as administrator and follow the on – screen instructions to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition.





Be ensuring to install both the database engine and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) which is the tool that we will be used to complete our queries.

Download and Attach AdventureWorks database into SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) >>>

Once you have the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition successfully installed on your machine, you will need to download the sample AdventureWorks2012 database. in this way please click here to navigate to download it absolutely free from Google drive location, once opened Drive location page please click on the “Download Anyway” button (if you are unable to reach at Drive location then follow the link: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1Rk2B3Uj1vj_14gnjhbJ2upEFpN6iQHYm&export=download). And download the file named “AdventureWorks2012_Data.zip”. Once downloaded please extract the files in the zipped folder. Move the file “.mdf” extention to the SQL Servers root folder – C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA. Referring the below snapshot –

Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) once the file is finished downloading. Once SSMS is open please connect to your newly installed SQL Server Express instance. You can type “.\SQLEXPRESS” in the “Server Name” field when first opening SQL Server Management Studio. Referring the below snapshot –





Once connected SQL Server Management Studio 2012 please click on the folder named “Databases”, and then select “Attach”. Referring the below snapshot –





The “Attach Databases” screen will appear as shown below –





Click on the “Add” button to open the “Location Database Files” screen where you will select the file named “AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf”. This is the AdventureWorks SQL database file that we downloaded previously. Referring the below snapshot –





Click on “OK” button once you have selected the correct file. Information will populate into the “Attach Databases” screen based on what *.mdf file you have selected. Since we downloaded the database file but not any log file associated with it please click on the row with the word “Log” in the “File Type” column. As an extra step to make sure you selected the correct file, the log row will contain the text “Not Found” in the “Message” column. After confirming you have selected the correct row please click “Remove” button and then press “OK” button. Referring the below snapshot –





Now right click on the “Databases” folder and select refresh, expand the “Databases” folder. The AdventureWorks2012 database will appear in the expanded list and now it’s ready as you can start your next work. Referring the below snapshot –
